OPEN is a web-based application aimed for assessment of nutrient intake and food consumption as well as for personalized diet planning. It has been developed by CSD, in cooperation with University Children’s Hospital Ljubljana, Oncology Institute Ljubljana, and the international non-profit association EuroFIR AISBL. OPEN can apply any food composition database complying with EuroFIR procedures that facilitate access to and exchange of comparable, high quality food composition data for industry, regulators and researchers across Europe. It considers nutrition recommendations from the German (DGE), Austrian (ÖGE) and Swiss (SGE and SVE) Societies for Nutrition, as well as, guidelines from the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). In order to prove the efficiency and correctness of a recipe-calculation procedure applied within OPEN, we made a study in which they evaluated the energy and nutrient contents of a sample of daily meals using analytical and calculation techniques. For this aim, OPEN applies food composition data from the Slovenian, European and USA sources. OPEN also applies weight yield and retention factors, most commonly applied by European compilers.
